Gilroy, CA - Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee was the victim of crime last Friday evening when his personal vehicle was stolen in Modesto.

Chief Smithee was in Modesto on personal business, attending a graduation after leaving Gilroy and driving directly to Modesto following work on Friday. After the ceremony, Smithee returned to where his trucked was parked to find it missing and presumed stolen by the Modesto police who are investigating the crime. The truck was locked and his vehicle alarm was activated.

Along with personal items in the vehicle, Smithee had temporarily stored his department-issued service firearm, police badge, and city-issued laptop computers in his truck. At this time, the truck has been recovered however the department-issued items have not been located. Following standard procedures, the City is conducting an administrative inquiry given the missing department-issued equipment.
