The community is invited to the Grand Opening of the City of Gilroy’s newest neighborhood park, Cydney Casper Park. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 23, at 10:00 a.m., located across from Las Animas Elementary School along Charles Lux Drive. This 3.3 acre park features amenities such as shade structures, basketball and bocce ball courts, children’s play areas, fitness stations, open lawn areas, and much more.
“The City Council and I are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Cydney Casper Park as the newest addition to Gilroy’s beautiful neighborhood park system.” said Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco, “Our parks enhance our neighborhoods and overall quality of life for our residents of all ages. This park, along with the new Hecker Pass Park will be places for our residents to enjoy recreational activities.”
This park was named after Cydney Casper, who was the City of Gilroy Lead Planner assigned to the Glen Loma Ranch project. Regrettably, she is not able to witness or experience the fulfillment of her vision due to her untimely passing on December 2, 2006. Cydney played an instrumental role in establishing awareness and consideration of the site’s physical attributes, ensuring that the developer work with the land to form a park unique to the characteristics of the neighborhood. Developers felt strongly that naming this park in her honor would be a fitting memorial, and also, recognition of City staff’s contribution to this project.
Curbside parking is located along Charles Lux Drive, Cimino Street, and Greenfield Drive. It is encouraged that residents carpool and neighbors utilize walking and biking pathways to get to this event.
