[ARCHIVED] Know Your Code: Fences and Hedges in Residential Areas

Fences and Hedges

We appreciate how everyone takes pride in their homes and neighborhoods. Today we’re providing some information on the code around fences and hedges in residential areas to help us all create a beautiful and safe community.

General Height Rule: In most cases, your fences and hedges can be up to seven feet tall. This measurement is taken from the ground on the higher side of the fence.

Front Yard Fences and Hedges: Got a fence or hedge in your front yard? If it's over 3 feet high, remember to set it back at least 26 feet from the curb. This helps keep our streets looking open and welcoming.

Corner Lot Considerations: Living on a corner lot? Any fence or hedge over 3 feet must be set back 16 feet from the curb. If it's near the driveway side of an alley or a key lot, set it back 10 feet from the street-side property line.

Special Code Section 20.60 for Corners: On corner lots, keep hedges and shrubs below 3 feet within a specific triangular area near the streets. This is crucial for clear sightlines at intersections.

Setbacks for Tall Fences and Hedges: Fences and hedges up to 8 feet are okay if they align with your main building's setbacks and are 6 feet away from side lot lines.

Garden Structures: Love gardening? Arbors, trellises, and pergolas can be up to 8 feet high in your front yard as long as they are set back at least 26 feet from the curb. Just ensure they don’t block views for traffic or pedestrians.

Prohibited Materials: There are a few fencing materials that are prohibited in residential areas. These include barbed wire, razor wire, wire mesh, and electrified fences.

Thank you for helping to keep our neighborhoods beautiful, safe, and friendly!
