Gilroy Police Chief Pedro Espinoza Announces Retirement After 22 years of Service to the City of Gilroy

Friday, January 31, 2025 (Gilroy, CA): After 22 years of dedicated service to the City of Gilroy and 30 years in law enforcement, Gilroy Police Chief Pedro Espinoza has announced his retirement, effective May 23, 2025.

Chief Espinoza has been a trusted leader, guiding the Gilroy Police Department with integrity and a deep commitment to the public and public safety. Under his leadership, the department has strengthened community partnerships, enhanced public safety initiatives, and remained steadfast in its mission to serve and protect the residents of Gilroy.

“I am announcing my decision to retire as Chief of Police, effective May 23, 2025,” said Chief Espinoza. “Serving this community has been the honor of my career, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished collectively—both as a department and as a city. The dedication of our officers and staff, combined with the support of our community, has helped foster a safer and more resilient community.”

City Administrator Forbis expressed gratitude for Chief Espinoza’s leadership and years of service, “Chief Espinoza has demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication as a public servant. His influence on both our community and the police department will be felt for many years to come. We are truly grateful for his service and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

"The City is planning to conduct a nationwide search for its next Police Chief. However, Chief Espinoza has made significant efforts to establish a model succession plan for the Police Department, which has resulted in strong internal candidates who are expected to compete for the position," stated City Administrator Forbis. "We will miss Chief Espinoza, but he leaves both the City and his Department in excellent condition to continue serving our community at the highest level."

As Chief Espinoza reflects on his tenure, he extends his sincere gratitude to the community, the Gilroy Police Department, and City staff. “Your trust and partnership have been invaluable,” said Chief Espinoza. “I am confident that the future of our community is bright, and I have no doubt that the department will continue to uphold the highest standards of service.”

The City of Gilroy will provide updates on the succession process as they become available.
