What is an ADU?
An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a secondary housing unit on the same lot as a primary single-family home. ADUs include permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation on the same lot as the single-family home.
Types of ADUs:
- Detached: A separate structure from the main home.
- Attached: Built as part of the primary residence.
- Converted: Existing spaces, such as garages or basements, repurposed into a living unit.
Why Consider an ADU?
Homeowners or property owners might explore ADUs for a variety of reasons:
- Rental Income: An ADU can be rented out to generate extra income.
- Family Use: Offers additional space for family members, such as aging parents or adult children.
- Affordable Housing: Adds to the housing options available in the community.
Newly-Launched Pre-Approved ADU Plans:
To streamline the building process, the City of Gilroy offers standardized ADU construction plans that have been pre-approved, facilitating a faster and more cost-effective permit process. These plans come in various sizes and architectural finishes. If the site-specific plan and required documents are accurate and complete, permits may be issued within 15 working days.
