20 feet away. That’s how far away vehicles must be when they park near crosswalks. Assembly Bill 413 (AB 413), passed on January 1, 2025, made it illegal under state law to park within 20 feet of a crosswalk whether or not it is marked. The law also stipulates a car cannot park within 15 feet of a crosswalk with a curb extension.
The law, AB 413, specifically prohibits parking adjacent to crosswalks, a practice known as “daylighting.” This new law aims to improve lines of sight for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Ultimately, the goal of the new law is to try and reduce the risk of collisions, particularly those that injure involved parties.
The Gilroy Police Department will begin enforcement of the new state law on April 2, 2025. Until then, Gilroy PD will be working to educate our community about the law and reminding people of the importance of making the roadway safe for everyone.
